The factors are too numerous for a hypothetical.

It's all contingent on the pain and the cause, I suppose. I don't care much for causes, overall. They're human ideals, for the most part, and human ideology is too often flawed.

But emotional pain is irrational and illogical. Arguably, logically, one could reason for either the former or the latter. The honesty of someone who admits their selfishness is nobility to some, while the adherence to cause and 'greater good' above all else nobility to others.

The pain caused, however, doesn't give a damn as to why.
